1 victim in Southern Pines pool hall shooting dies

Posted: Updated:

One of the five victims shot outside of a Southern Pines pool hall has died and now police are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Southern Pines police officers responded to Leather Pockets Billiards on Oct. 27 around 1:40 a.m. for a report of shots being fired. When officers arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims were identified as Maurice Donnell White, 31, Curtis Lee Stubbs Jr., 22, Derrikes Lamonte McRae, 38, Jacore Rayshad McKoy, 22 and Lee Marvin Harris Jr., 28.

White died Thursday. McRae remains in the hospital in stable condition.

The Southern Pines Police Department is requesting that anyone who was at the pool hall on the night of the shooting to contact them. Police say they are getting little cooperation from the victims.

According to authorities, this is not the first incident at Leather Pockets Billiards. The pool hall was recently investigated in May for operating without an alcohol beverage permit.

In June, an application was received by the Southern Pines Police Department from Leather Pockets Billiards seeking a "Local Government Opinion" required as part of the permitting process mandated in North Carolina. On June 6, Police Chief Robert Temme denied the permit for Leather Pockets Billiards and notified the N.C.  Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission of the disapproval of the issuance of an alcohol beverage permit citing a pending criminal charge and prior incidents at this location.

On June 10, Leather Pockets was issued a temporary permit by the ABC Commission to operate as a bar. Following the shooting incident last week, Leather Pockets Billiards has voluntarily surrendered its temporary permit and is currently prohibited from operating as an establishment serving alcohol.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Southern Pines Police Department at 910-692-7031 or the Crime tip line at 910-693-4110.
