Lab results show Durham girl did not have meningitis

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Lab results from a Durham 5-year-old who died of from suspected meningococcal (bacterial) meningitis last week have come back negative for the bacteria, Durham Public Health said Tuesday.

The child attended kindergarten at Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham.

"Although the child's blood culture was negative, the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis was made based on the clinical findings and the evaluation of the physicians who treated her," said Dr. Arlene Seña, the public health department's medical director.

There are no other pending laboratory results, Durham officials said. There have been no other reported cases of suspected meningitis at the school.

The Durham County Department of Public Health has given 14 preventative antibiotics to students at Mount Zion Christian Academy, the department said Monday.

Durham health officials had investigated a"probable case" of bacterial meningitis after the student at the school died last week. Classes were canceled Thursday following the development, so the school could be cleaned as a precaution. The child's mother works at the daycare on-site, according to the school.
