Largo renter complains that landlord removed her front door

Posted: Updated:
LARGO, FL (WFLA) -

Deidra Navarro came home from work to find her front door missing. For the past 10 days, she's used her bedroom door as a temporary door, but it falls off every time she opens it. She has a friend guard her door at night.

"I can't lock my house," she said. "I can't do anything."

Navarro says the property manager told her the door was carted away for repairs, although she says there was nothing wrong with it.

"He told me it was going to be $150 to replace the door and I had to pay $550 before he would replace the door and it was going to take another day and a half . I asked him what was wrong with my door and he said it was none of my business."

Navarro called 8-on your-side, and we took the issue to Ash Farid, the property manager. He said the door was supposed to be re-installed the same day, but when his worker failed to do that, he fired him.

But now things have spiraled out of control and he wants to evict Navarro.

"She uses foul language, and she makes a lot of noise and uses very irresponsible behavior toward the tenants around," he said.

At first, he said he was keeping the door. But after meeting with 8-on-on-your-side, he decided to put on a brand new door.

Navarro was happy to be able to sleep at night securely.

"We did something about it, we got in touch with you guys. you guys definitely helped a lot and got something done about all this. it's a very big help, and I thank you guys a lot. Keep up the good work."

But even with a new door, Navarro's housing trouble isn't over. She still faces a possible eviction.

News Channel 8 reached out to the property owner, Tampa doctor William Assad to find out if he had any reaction to this story.  He did not return WFLA's phone calls.

According to Florida's Landlord, Tenant Act,  it is against the law to not provide a tenant with a working front door.  The law lays out a very specific procedure on how to legally evic a tenant.  The property manager in this case says he plans to follow othat procedure.
