Durham demonstration protesting teen's death turns destructive

Durham police arrested Shahqeel Alexander McCrimmon, 19, of Durham and charged him with failure to disperse on command, holding a meeting/demonstration while wearing a mask or hood and causing a public disturbance. DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham police said a demonstration started peacefully at the bull statue in Durham but ended with property damage at Durham Police Headquarters Friday night.

Demonstrators were protesting the death of 17-year-old Jesus Huerta when the protest became unruly. Police said outside agitators joined the group and marched to police headquarters where the vandalism occurred.

No one was injured.

Durham police arrested Shahqeel Alexander McCrimmon, 19, of Durham and charged him with failure to disperse on command, holding a meeting/demonstration while wearing a mask or hood and causing a public disturbance.

He was released from jail after posting a $1,500 bond, police said. 

A 14-year-old male was charged with injury to property and released to the custody of his parents, according to Durham police. 

The incident remains under investigation.
