'Click It or Ticket' begins NC holiday campaign

RALEIGH, N.C. -

State Highway Patrol troopers are stepping up their enforcement of North Carolina's seat belt law as people begin to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Governor's Highway Safety Program kicked off the Thanksgiving "Click It or Ticket" campaign in Wilmington on Monday. The increased enforcement continues through Dec. 1.

Don Nail, director of the Governor's Highway Safety Program, says wearing a seat belt during a crash reduces chances of suffering critical injuries or death by 50 percent.

In May, the program celebrated the 20th anniversary of "Click It or Ticket." The celebration continued with word last month that seat belt usage statewide rose from 87.5 percent to 88.6 percent in the past year.
