Shops in eastern North Carolina offered deals to attract customers on Small Business Saturday.
Boston Bags & Tags in Greenville, gave customers an additional 15% off their purchase if they brought in a receipt from another small business. Owner, Laura McKeel-Gladson says she has noticed in increase in people looking to shop locally.
"I think people are embracing shopping locally more and more. I think they can't get the customer service that they can at the other places," said McKeel-Gladson.
It's that personalize experience that Gordon's Golf, Ski & Snowboard in Greenville says has help keep them open for more than 40 years, even after a fire earlier this year.
"Every customer that comes is a special customer," says Gordon's owner Pell Fulp.
American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010.
In 2012, shoppers spent 5.5 billion dollars on Small Business Saturday.

While many large retailers are opening their doors to bargain shoppers on Thanksgiving this year, local shops are trying to attract patrons on Saturday.
This Saturday will be the fourth annual Small Business Saturday. Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is a push for shoppers to spend their money locally.
