TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - It was the grisly Tampa Bay-area murder made headlines across the country. Valessa Robinson was only 15 years old when she killed her mother at their family home in Carrollwood in 1998.

But now, the 30-year-old could soon be a free woman. Robinson is scheduled to be released from confinement early and will walk out of the Homestead Correctional Institution this Friday, WFLA News Channel 8 has learned exclusively.

Valessa Robinson was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the crime. She was convicted of third-degree murder for the death of her mother, Vicki Robinson, 49, a divorced real estate agent. Valessa's boyfriend, Adam Davis, and another friend, Jon Whispel were also involved in the murder. Davis is on death row and Whispel is serving a 25-year sentence.

In court, jurors saw two sides of Valessa. Each day during the trial, the teenager wore prim and proper button down sweaters. However, jurors heard testimony that this was exactly the kind of image that Valessa rebelled against.

Jurors heard testimony that Valessa was sexually active at the age of 13 and that she frequently used drugs and drank alcohol. Jurors also heard a taped confession from Valessa who said she stabbed her mother in the neck and then, because she wasn't dead, she stabbed her twice more in the back.

Her defense attorney DeeAnn Athan, to this day, doesn't believe that.

"Adam was trying to inject Vicki with the syringe with bleach and it wasn't working and Jon Whispel was the one who had gone back into the bedroom, had picked up the knife and walked back into the kitchen, handed it to Adam and said 'here use this,'" Athan said in an exclusive interview with Gayle Sierens.

Athan said she wouldn't describe Valessa Robinson as a victim though.

"I would describe her as a 15 year-old who was experimenting with drugs, who was experimenting with sex with a 19 year-old," she said. "It was like a train picking up speed, going down the tracks. Eventually I guess the train was just going too fast to put on the brakes and this is what happened. I wouldn't call her a victim, but I would say she wasn't very well protected for a 15-year-old."
