Ex-Robeson fire chief charged with embezzlement

Posted: Updated:
LUMBERTON, N.C. -

A former rural fire chief in Robeson County has been charged with stealing money from his volunteer fire department.

A grand jury indicted Bruce Sampson of Lumberton on charges of embezzlement and larceny Tuesday, sheriff's Lt. Brian Duckworth said.

Sampson turned himself in to deputies, Duckworth said.

Sampson headed the Deep Branch Volunteer Fire Department west of Lumberton.

Indictments say the thefts occurred between 2007 and 2009. It's not clear how much money was taken, but based on the category of charges, it was at least $100,000. It was not clear if Sampson has a lawyer.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been working on the case, Duckworth said. The investigation began in August.

Sampson has had no prior criminal charges. He was scheduled to make a first appearance in court Wednesday.
