Daytime closures for 'Fortify' will be delayed until next week

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The daytime closures of I-440 West as part of North Carolina Department of Transportation's vast Fortify Raleigh project will not start until next week, the DOT said late Wednesday afternoon.

The delay affects the planned closures between the I-40/Beltline split and the U.S. 64/264 interchange.

The overnight lane closures on both the east and westbound sides of the interstate started earlier in the week.

The Fortify project is the removal and replacement of an 11.5-mile stretch of I-40 and I-440.

The DOT took a short break on the work over the Thanksgiving holiday before the overnight closures began.

Starting at 11 p.m. Wednesday, plastic traffic-control barrels will be used to direct motorists to the outside lane and shoulder from the I-40/440 split to Sunnybrook Road.
