Fort Bragg lights Christmas tree, recognizes family of the year

Posted: Updated:

Fort Bragg officially kicked off the Christmas Season Monday night with a tree lighting festival on the post's parade grounds.

In addition to the tree lighting, children got to visit with Santa Claus and enjoy activities such as sledding on a slide of manmade snow. There was also singing by school children and the USO Show Troupe from New York City.

Before the tree lighting, the Fort Bragg Family of the Year was named. Twenty-six finalists were recognized during a ceremony at the Main Post Chapel.

This year's winner was the Bauer family, which includes Command Sgt. Major Bill Bauer, his wife Laura and their son Will. Command Sgt. Major Bauer serves with the 1st Battalion 321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment (1-321 AFAR), 18th Fires Brigade.

Each year the Fort Bragg Family of the Year is chosen based on the family's contributions and involvement with their associated military unit and the community.
