About 200 Charlotte-Mecklenburg school students will be displaced because of development. The Silver Oak Apartment complex, in east Charlotte, will soon be torn down and replaced with a newer development. Residents received a notice to vacate last month.
Nearly 300 residents have to find a new place by January 10.
"I had no idea this was coming," Silver Oak Apartment Neighbor Shaera Davis said. "Not at all."
Davis has two kids who attend Rama Road ES. She is not the only parent concerned. There are 100 students from Rama Road, 56 students from East Meck High School and 46 students from McClintock MS all in need of housing.
Davis said she realized she was on a month to month lease but wasn't suspicious of that. She says management said her lease was to be longer.
"That's what they told us," Davis said. "And we assumed it would be for an entire year.'
Goode Management who owns Silver Oak says they informed tenants about the possibility of notice to vacate due to redevelopment. While tenants and management disagree on that, Christ Lutheran Church is helping tenants find money to find a new place.
The pastor believes this is the right thing to do.
"It's been really important to move beyond the walls of our congregation," Christ Lutheran Church Pastor Scott Suskovic said. "And really be engaged. It takes the blinders off of us to realize that our world is much more diverse than who we are as a congregation."
Amy Daniels from Christ Lutheran Church is helping neighbors fill out the paperwork to get money from Crisis Assistance Ministry. Christ Lutheran Church adopted McClintock and now they are supporting all schools impacted by the redevelopment. Daniels says this is not easy for the tenants.
"That's the hard part," Daniels said. "That is them finding a place to move. There is not enough places and apartments in their price range."
Goode Management says it will give tenants their deposit money back so they will have some money to get a new place.
CMS says if students are forced to move outside their attendance zone, they can still attend their same school for this year, but parents will have to provide transportation.
