In the last two seasons, college football's premier award has gone to players who had never taken a single snap in a college game prior to the start of their Heisman-winning seasons. This year, it could happen again.

AUSTIN, TX (RNN) - The Austin Statesman walked back an earlier report that embattled Texas football coach Mack Brown would meet with school officials about his future Thursday night. The meeting will be Friday, the newspaper's website is now reporting.

Brown has already discussed resigning with officials earlier this week, according to an earlier Statesman story by University of Texas sports beat writer Brian Davis.

If Brown does step down, all eyes will turn to Alabama and Nick Saban, who has been rumored to be the school's top target for Brown's job for months.

Earlier Thursday, Brown told reporters at a news conference in San Antonio that he would meet with university president Bill Powers and new athletic director Steve Patterson to discuss the future of Longhorns football. Brown's team, which finished a disappointing 8-4, will play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl there on Dec. 30.

Saban reportedly has been offered a contract extension at Alabama that would pay him $7 million a year. According to national ESPN radio host Paul Finebaum, the offer has been on Saban's desk since last Friday.

The Statesman reported that after the San Antonio news conference, billionaire UT booster Red McCombs said money would be no object if the Longhorns wanted Saban.

"Hell, all the money that's not in the Vatican is up at UT. If that's a problem, then I'm a part of the problem," he said.
