Havelock wins third straight state title, James Kenan also a winner

Four high school football teams from Eastern North Carolina played for state championships today and two of them will bring home hardware. The Havelock Rams won their third straight state title today with a 21-13 victory over Concord. The game was a rematch of the 3A state championship game from last year and was every bit as good.

Down 10-0, Havelock Coach Jim Bob Bryant and company rallied behind the effort of senior running-back Derrell Scott. The MVP ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns, the third of which put the Rams ahead 21-10. Concord battled back, cut the deficit to eight, and got the ball back late in the fourth quarter. The Spiders drove the field only to see time run out on them near the goal line.

"Three in a row should be attributed to my coaching staff and my players," said Jim Bob Bryant. "My coaches and my players do a great job every week. It's a year around program, we bust our tails in the offseason and that's why we're the number one team in the state for three years in a row."

Elsewhere the Southwest Onslow Stallions lost in the 2A final to Shelby. Southwest won the state championship last year at the 1AA level but the death of their quarterback in the offseason rocked the team. The Stallions made a great run through the playoffs but fell today 29-7.

In Winston-Salem the Plymouth Vikings had a rematch with Murphy in the 1A state championship. The game was back and forth just like last year but the ending was even more wild. Down seven with less than a minute to go Plymouth quarterback Malik Webb hit Demarkus Price to cut the deficit to one. Plymouth went for two and the win but was stopped. Murphy won 35-34.

In the 1AA final James Kenan finished their undefeated dream season with a win over West Montgomery. The Tigers won 42-14.
