Investigator says camp director child porn case involved kids 5 and under

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

A former camp director has been arrested on child pornography charges following a two-month investigation by Orange County authorities.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested Bruce Howard Aycock on Wednesday on federal charges of receiving and distribution child pornography.

"This is one of the worst cases I've worked on, because of the age of the victims," said investigator Chan McDade of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say Aycock collected and distributed thousands of images and hundreds of videos of children age 5 and under.

McDade said there were no images they knew of from children in Orange County.

Executive director Richard Stevens of New Hope Camp and Conference Center in Hillsborough confirmed that Aycock used to work there. Aycock worked there for five years and lived on the property with his wife.

"This week the Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested Bruce Howard Aycock on federal charges of receiving child pornography and distribution of child pornography," Stevens said. "Mr. Aycock is a former employee of New Hope.  New Hope suspended Mr. Aycock as soon as we were made aware of these allegations and he resigned soon after.

"There are no allegations that Mr. Aycock's activities involved New Hope Camp & Conference Center, to our knowledge, and we understand that all of the allegations revolve around Mr. Aycock's activities on the Internet."

New Hope Camp is a long-established camp that began in 1950 and is located on 165 acres between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children provided information to authorities from a Cybertip.

McDade said Aycock used Drop Box, a popular web software to store data, to collect and distribute the porn. McDade said Drop Box provided the tip to investigators.

Aycock could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
