SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT/AP) – The ferry that ran aground on a sandbar on the North Carolina coast was successfully recovered Thursday morning at 9:00.

According to the Bald Head Island Limited director of communications, crews were able to refloat the ferry without damaging the vessel or environmental impact.

The "Adventure" will make a trip upriver to Wilmington under its own power. It will likely be hauled and dry-docked Thursday for complete inspection.

The 64-foot ferry ran aground shortly after leaving Southport for Bald Head Island on Tuesday. At least 30 people were on the ferry, and 14 people were transported to nearby hospitals.

Coast Guard investigators are looking into the cause of the crash.

According to a spokesperson for Bald Head Island Limited, the captain of the boat which was involved in the accident has not returned to work and is no longer on the schedule, pending discussion with the Coast Guard and outcome of the investigation.
