Duke Energy implodes smokestacks at Goldsboro plant

Posted: Updated:
GOLDSBORO, N.C. -

Duke Energy Progress' demolition specialist imploded the smokestacks at the a retired power plant in Goldsboro Friday morning.

Duke Energy said the implosion at H.F. Lee Steam Plant was part of the company's ongoing effort to transition to cleaner energy sources.

A second implosion will demolish the boilers and is scheduled for the spring of 2014.

Duke Energy said the company's goal for retired coal-fired sites such as H.F. Lee is to dismantle the equipment and buildings, and restore the site to ground level.

H.F. Lee Steam Plant served the region for more than 60 years.

Duke Energy said it replaced the coal plant with a new 920-megawatt natural gas-fired combined cycle plant that began serving customers in December 2012.
