CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A Chapel Hill man who crashed into a utility pole early Sunday morning causing a 15-hour power outage had a 0.1 blood-alcohol level.

Franklin Dalina Goncalves, 23, was charged with driving while impaired after he slammed into utility poles early Sunday morning in the 100 block of Ephesus Church Road.

Gonclaves was not injured, but police said he had a blood alcohol content of 0.1. The legal limit to operate a motor vehicle is 0.08.

Utility crews worked for much of the day Sunday to repair the damage caused by the crash, which cut power for more than 15 hours. Power was restored to the thousands affected by 9 p.m. Sunday.

"It was not that bad today, but tonight, it's kind of inconvenient because it's really dark and we don't have hot water," Caitlin Scurria said Sunday night.

Scurria decided "to go on a hike because we couldn't hang out in the house because it was cold in here."

And Abbey Underwood, too, found the break from modern conveniences somewhat refreshing.

"It was good for us," Underwood said. "We didn't need to use the TV or phones. We got to enjoy nature."
