WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -

A memorial service will be held for Helen Copenhaver Hanes, an early supporter of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, who died at the age of 96.

A news release from the school says Hanes died early Saturday.

Her husband, the late James Gordon Hanes, was a state senator who introduced legislation establishing the N.C. School of the Arts in 1963.

In 1964, Helen Hanes and other volunteers called almost every phone number in Winston-Salem, raising more than $850,000 to ensure that Winston-Salem would be the home of the School of the Arts. The school was renamed later.

A family graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Salem Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church.

Gifts can be made to the School of the Arts in her memory.
