Pickle drop a quirky New Year's tradition

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - At the corner of Cucumber and Vine, you'll find a rather quirky New Year's tradition.

Every year, a giant pickle comes crashing down at the stroke of seven o'clock midnight.

“We love coming here,” said Joy Roy, pickle drop attendee. “Here’s a lot of people, a lot of fun, and pickles. I love pickles.”

Roy isn't the only one. In 2011, nearly 3,000 showed up.

“You hear about all the quirky things, the acorn, the pickle, the peach, but this really sets it apart from the rest. Well, we think it does,” said Lynn Williams, Mt. Olive Pickle Company.

People from all over the country visit the Mount Olive campus on New Year’s Eve and some say they’re not afraid to admit it.

“Most of my friends think I'm weird to come all the way here for a pickle drop, but it’s fun,” one of them told 9 On Your Side.

“And what do your friends say about you coming to the pickle drop,” 9 On Your Side asked.

“They think I'm extremely weird and my friends thought I was going to New York,” answered another.

But whatever your reason is for coming, one thing's for sure, pickles will be involved.

“Free hot chocolate, pickles and cookies,” said Williams. “And for all the years we've done it, the menu has never changed.”

Apple says that some celebrity accounts were deliberately targeted and hacked, leading to the posting of nude photos online.
Apple said Tuesday that hackers obtained nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other female celebrities by pilfering images from individual accounts rather than through a broader attack on the company's services.
