PETERSBURG, KY (WAVE) - Bill Nye, the host of a popular kids' science show in the 1990s, is scheduled to debate creationism in Kentucky in February.
Nye will debate Ken Ham, the founder of the Creation Museum in Petersburg, on the question: "Is creation a viable model of origins?" The debate takes place February 4 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The "Bill Nye the Science Guy" host has become an outspoken supporter of a science-based education. In 2012, he said parents were doing a disservice to their children by teaching them creationism.
"I really trust that Bill Nye will come through with this," Ham said. "I believe he will. He's a well-known, highly respected personality. I think this is going to bring the creation-evolution issue to the public in a way that hasn't been done in a long time."
Nye appeared in a 2012 video produced by the media group Big Think, in which he said the world becomes "fantastically complicated" for people who don't believe in evolution.
"If you want to deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine -- but don't make your kids do it," Nye said in the video. "We need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future."
Tickets for the debate will go on sale Monday, January 6, and will cost $25. Creation Museum members will receive a discount.
The 800 tickets will likely sell quickly after news of the debate went viral on social media, Ham said. He said the Creation Museum's website crashed multiple times Thursday because of heavy web traffic.
"I must admit, we never expected this much response," Ham said. "It's greater than we ever expected, from Christians and non-Christians, so I think that's great."
Ham said the Creation Museum entered into a contract with Nye and will pay for his travel expenses.
The debate format isn't finalized but may include about a 45-minute presentation from both sides and a question-and-answer session involving the audience's written questions, Ham said.
