CARTHAGE, N.C. -

Family and friends in Moore County are mourning the death of 16-year-old Kayla Lineberry, who died Thursday night after running off a country road.

The accident happened on Summer Hill Church Road, just west of Carthage.

Friday, a memorial was set up to remember a girl who was proud to be a tough-minded tomboy who was determined to make the football team at Union Pines High School. She played on the junior varsity team and wanted to make varsity.

"She got a little upset when they said she was too small to play - all she could be was the kicker," said her uncle, Terry Patterson. He added with a chuckle, "I think she wanted to tackle some guys."

Her family and friends are left now with the memories of a girl described as funny and full of life.

Her car veered off the road near Carthage and she died at the scene.

Neighbor John Oltesvig said he has seen at least four accidents in front of his home in the last seven years.

"I call it ‘Dead Man's Curve' along through here," he said.

"We need something along this stretch of road, some warnings, some bumps or something to get people to slow down. It's very dangerous."

The memorial to Lineberry there now is a reminder of the danger. There are flowers and a message, "You're in a much better place."

"She was brave," said her friend, Ryan Taylor. "If you said she couldn't do something, that just made her want to do it even more, just to show you she could do it.

"Everybody loved her. She was a great girl."
