Deputies arrest man for robbing, shooting man in leg

Posted: Updated:
FARMVILLE, N.C. - Deputies have made an arrest in the case of a man who was shot and wounded in front of his four kids.

James Taylor of Fountain was arrested and charged Wednesday night with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiring to commit that crime, assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill, and first degree kidnapping.

On January 3rd, Donavan Flores and his four children were at the Farmville Hustle Mart to buy a piece of equipment when they were followed by four men to California Road. But instead of showing Flores the equipment, deputies say he was robbed and shot in the leg.

Flores managed to drive his kids back to the Hustle Mart and make it inside, where he asked for help.

Taylor was placed under a $200,000 bond.

--- Original Story ---

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Friday night shooting in Farmville.

Deputies says just before 9 p.m. a man entered the Hustle Mart and told employees  he'd been shot. That man is 28-year-old father of four, Donovan Florez.

Florez tells 9 On Your Side he was driving to a friends house when some people he knew wanted to meet up to sell him some music equipment. Although he had his four kids in the car, he agreed to meet them at the Hustle Mart in Farmville.

When he got to the Hustle Mart, one of the men told him they couldn't show him the equipment since the store had cameras. One of suspects then asked Florez to follow them up the road so they could show him the equipment. Florez says since he had met the men before, he trusted them.

Florez followed them to a remote California Road, where the suspects robbed him.

"He asked me how I was going to pay him. When I got close to his car I saw he had gotten a shotgun. Then another one came out of the car and came behind me and started taking stuff from me. He took out my wallet, he took out my money  and put it on the floor. When I went to go get my wallet, he shot," said Florez.

Florez suffered two gunshot wounds to the right leg and a graze to the left thigh.

"The police told me that the suspects didn't want to shoot me. What they wanted to do was just scare me, but since they shot against the concrete it bounced off and hit me.," said Florez.

After shooting him, the suspects drove away.

Florez managed to drive himself and his kids back to the Hustle Mart for help. He was taken to Vidant Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The children were not injured during the incident. Florez' girlfriend, Christina Montgomery, says luckily the children did not see the shooting and are unaware of what happened to there father.

"I was concerned like my kids were in there and it's just ridiculous how people don't realize there's  kids right in front," said Montgomery.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says the shooting is still under investigation.
