'Bubba the ram' to be auctioned in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Bubba the Ram, the spirited animal who ran free in the Triangle before being captured Dec. 10, is looking for his forever home – and will be auctioned off, likely in a few weeks.

The Durham County Office of the County Attorney sent out an official notice Tuesday afternoon that Bubba would be auctioned off Jan. 27.

But that date was pushed back later and no firm date has been set yet, Durham County Sheriff's attorney Curtis Massey said.

Massey said the auction, which will be handled by the Sheriff's Office, had to be pushed back because North Carolina statutes say any captured livestock must be kept 30 days to allow an owner to claim it, and then there has to be another 20 days for the announcement of the sale.

Thus, there isn't enough time from the capture on Dec. 10 to Jan. 27 to meet the statutory requirements.

Massey, by the way, said the county has no idea how much Bubba might bring.

"I have absolutely no idea," he said. "We've never auctioned a goat."

The animal, which what some say is a rare breed of sheep called Barbados Mouflon, had amused workers in the Triangle and residents around Durham after random spottings began in August.

Bubba's exact whereabouts now weren't revealed in the notice Tuesday, but this much was clear – Bubba can be yours, for the right price.
