GREENSBORO, N.C. -

Federal authorities have arrested a South Carolina man in the 1990 death of a Greensboro girl.

U.S. Marshals arrested Donald Preston Ferguson, 52, of Spartanburg, S.C., on Tuesday. He is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sex offense in connection with the death of 7-year-old Shalonda S. Poole.

Police say forensic evidence linked Ferguson to Poole's death.

Capt. Mike Richey says officers have been working on the case for years.

The girl's body was found behind an elementary school. Police say she had been assaulted and strangled. Police say Ferguson occasionally worked in the area near the school. He left the area the month after girl disappeared from her home, investigators said.

Ferguson was convicted in a sexual assault case in Spartanburg and was released from a South Carolina prison in 1997. He was on probation at the time of his arrest this week.

He's being held in the Spartanburg County jail pending extradition to Greensboro. It was not clear if he has a lawyer.
