Clayton man charged in shooting near Halifax Co. hunting club

CLAYTON, N.C. -

A Clayton man has been arrest and charged in connection with a New Year's Day shooting near a local Halifax County hunting club.

Johnston County authorities arrested Chad Thomas Griffin, 39, on Jan. 10 and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault inflicting serious injury.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 1. The victim had an altercation with Griffin, where the victim had been physically assaulted.

The victim then tried to leave the hunting club when Griffin allegedly approached the victim and shot him in the leg.

The victim was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities said alcohol was a factor in the incident and Griffin was given a $51,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is Feb. 12.
