The Texas Legends have acquired guard P.J. Hairston from the University of North Carolina, the minor league basketball team announced Tuesday.

Hairston (6 feet 6, 220 pounds) will be the first player to enter the NBA Development League mid-season after having been enrolled in college to start the 2013-14 season, the team said. As a sophomore at North Carolina, he led UNC in scoring and was 10th overall in the ACC with 14.6 points per game while averaging only 1.2 turnovers.

He can not move to the NBA this season but is eligible for the NBA Draft in June.

"We are excited to add a player like P.J. Hairston," said Legends Owner and Dallas Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson. "P.J. has been on the NBA radar for a number of years now, and the opportunity for him to develop and showcase his ability with the Legends is unique.

"We are surrounding PJ with all of the necessary tools to prepare himself for the NBA Draft. I am excited to see him in a Legends uniform this weekend."

"I'm extremely grateful that the Texas Legends organization believes in my abilities, and thank them for signing me to their team" Hairston said in a statement. "I intend to take full advantage of this opportunity. This is another positive step towards accomplishing the goals I set out for myself. This is an exciting time."

Hairston announced last week that he submitted paperwork to play in the NBA Development League.

Hairston is expected to be in uniform for the Legends home game against the Austin Toros this Saturday night.

The Tar Heels' leading scorer never played this season after the school decided last month not to seek his reinstatement for NCAA rules violations, including using rental vehicles tied to a felon and party promoter in Durham.
