'Bollywood Oscars' coming to Tampa

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The so-called 'Bollywood Oscars' are coming to the Bay area.

The International Indian Film Awards will make their American debut in Tampa this April.  On Tuesday, Indian film stars and directors joined Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn in officially announcing the details of the 15th Annual IIFA Weekend & Awards celebration.

The event will be held for the first time on American soil, in Tampa, from April 24th through the 26th.

"We are happy to celebrate the Indian culture, to celebrate Indian dance, to celebrate the movie-making industry in India," said Mayor Buckhorn.  "This is an amazing opportunity for you to tell your story in America, and for us to tell our story to the world."

"I'm so happy that it's come to Tampa Bay," said Priyanka Chopra, an Indian film star.  "It gives me a really great excuse to come here and check out another city in my favorite state."

Tickets to the film festival are now on sale through Ticketmaster

The IIFA Awards will be making a three-city tour of the U.S., also stopping in New York and Los Angeles.
