UNC's Hatchell makes first public appearance since cancer diagnosis

RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina women's head basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell made her first public appearance Wednesday since being diagnosed with cancer.

Hatchell appeared at the Raleigh Sports Club at Ridge Road Baptist Church.

"I'm a little bit tired. This is the first time I've been out doing speaking like this, but these people have been loyal to me in the past," Hatchell said of the Raleigh Sports Club.

Hatchell, who will go back to the hospital for another round of chemo Thursday, said she is still very much involved with her team.

"I've been out there a lot lately, not really coaching but I'm at practice," she explained. "I am in remission, my numbers are good, but it depends on how long we spread these treatments out.

"It's a marathon, not a sprint. We're winning the marathon and that's good, but that will be determined by my doctors," Hatchell explained.

Hatchell's 12th ranked Tar Heels are the youngest team in the nation, starting four freshmen and a sophomore.

"That's my motivation to work hard, I've got a trainer and work out every day. It's exciting to be around those young kids they make me feel better," she said.

Hatchell said she puts in at least two to five hours of basketball work every day, but needs to be careful around people.

"The biggest thing is contact with people, because of infection. I have to be careful about picking up germs," she said.

In a few months, Hatchell feels she will be close to 100 percent. She's scheduled for two or three more rounds of chemo after Thursday's treatment.
