ECU prepares for FAU

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The ECU basketball team is in search of Conference USA win number one and they're set on getting it Thursday at Florida Atlantic. After an impressive start to their season, East Carolina was slapped back to reality on Saturday against Old Dominion. The Pirate freshman had perhaps their worst game of the year but an even bigger problem was the Pirate defense. It's an issue that has to get fixed if this East Carolina team wants to win tomorrow at Florida Atlantic.

The owls are just 5-11 on the season but are coming off an impressive 73-68 victory over Rice. Meanwhile, ECU looks like they are going in the other direction.

They've lost three of their last four, they were held under 80 points in three of those games, and on the defensive side they've allowed more than 80 in four of their last five contests.

Coach Jeff Lebo is dead set on changing those trends. He says his team has worked on defense all week and knows what they have to improve on.

I would argue we live in one of the best places to cover football. At the high school level our teams always win state championships, then you get to see many of those players excel in college.

On a night when star senior receiver Justin Hardy snared a pair of touchdown passes and became East Carolina's all-time leader in receptions, it was a pass he threw that will be remembered as the highlight of the 2014 season-opener Saturday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
