For Barbour County Commission chairman Earl Gilmore, it's a problem that hits a little too close to home. He lives about a mile down the road from where dozens of deer and other wild animal carcasses have been dumped. It's a problem many are concerned about.

“Everybody is up in arms with all these deer carcasses along these roads in Eufaula,” says Gilmore.

Most of the animal carcasses are found along Five Mile Road in Eufaula. Gilmore says animal remains have been dumped in Barbour County for quite some time.

“10-15 years,” says Gilmore. “They've been throwing them out like this, but not on this scale…this is the worst it's been...ever. So we need to stop it,” says Gilmore.

Some of the carcasses have been dumped in or close to bodies of water. The county’s drinking water does not come from the creek where many remains have been found, but many are concerned of indirectly consuming animals that drink from the water.

“If it's not directly dumped in the water, you've got runoff going through these carcasses and picking up contagions, contaminants, possible diseases,” says Barbour County Engineer Patrick McDougald.

McDougald says it's been a constant issue during his 26 years as the county's engineer.

“Unfortunately, it's not an isolated incident. It's sad and it's something our society is going to have to do better,” says McDougald.

McDougald says he's working with a company to come out and properly dispose of the remains. He says they will most likely be buried.

The Barbour County Sheriff's Department also says they are working to find out who's responsible for dumping the animal remains. First-time offenders face a $250 fine plus court costs for this kind of activity.
