Hagan fights military pension cuts

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -
A day after Senator Kay Hagan hit the spotlight for missing the president’s visit to North Carolina, the Senator wanted to talk business. She stressed the importance of passing legislation that restores the pension cuts for veterans.

A bi-partisan budget agreement reduced the pension for working age vets, but Hagan says going through with the bill, breaks our country's promise to vets.

“These men and women have put their lives on the line for each and every one of us and think it is fitting, it is right and it is proper that the United States government maintains that commitment to each and every military individual that has served us and continues to serve us,” Hagan said.

A spending bill negotiated Monday includes language repealing a cut for disabled military veterans but not all. The young most recent vets returning from Afghanistan and Iraq will still feel the brunt of these cuts. They don’t go into effect until 2015.

Hagan says military members serving more than 20 years are due to receive retirement benefits. The proposal on the table cuts cost of living increase by 1% until the service members reach the age of 62.
