Man pays to hunt endangered black rhino, family gets death threats

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS - A man who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the right to hunt an endangered species says people are threatening to kill him and his family.

The Dallas Safari Club auctioned off a permit from the Namibian government to kill one of the world's few remaining black rhinos.  The black rhinoceros is on the list of critically endangered species.

Corey Knowlton, the winner of the auction, says the animal he'll be allowed to hunt will be an old rhino- one that poses a dangerous threat to younger animals and is no longer capable of breeding.  But many want the rhino to be protected and Knowlton, who was recently outed on social media, claims his family is now being threatened.

"I had no idea it would be this visceral,” said Knowlton.  “I had no idea that they would be attacking my two-year-old daughter and my seven-year-old daughter and my beautiful young wife."

Knowlton says the $350,000 he paid for the hunting permit goes to help save the species by raising awareness about wildlife conservation.
