DURHAM, N.C. -

Book Harvest, a Durham-based nonprofit that gives books to low-income children, is hosting a community-wide book drive Monday, Jan. 20.

The event is called 10,000 Books for Kids, will be held at the Carolina Theatre of Durham from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

"Dr. King famously said, ‘Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?'", said Book Harvest's founder, Ginger Young in a written release. "Dr. King's call to action rings as true today as it did when he posed it 56 years ago. With 10,000 Books for Kids, we hope to honor Dr. King's legacy of service and offer every member of our community a chance to serve by sharing the joy of owning books with children in need."

Durham Mayor Bill Bell will kick off the festivities at 1:00 p.m. The event will also feature Wool E. Bull, the mascot for the Durham Bulls.

2013 Book Harvest

Book Harvest has set an ambitious goal of 10,000 book donations. Already, more than 20 schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, places of worship, book clubs, and civic groups have signed up to run book drives, culminating with the delivery of their donated books to the Carolina Theatre.

NC Literacy Corps volunteers will be stationed at the curb outside the theatre to receive donations for those who cannot stay for the festivities.
