NC state workers, governor to remember King

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina state employees are gathering again in a downtown Raleigh church to remember the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and honor a state worker for improving their community and race relations.

The annual state employees' King observance service was scheduled for midday Friday. Gov Pat McCrory planned to attend and speak. He'll also present the John R. Larkins Award, one of state government's highest honors.

King was assassinated in 1968. Wednesday marked the 85th anniversary of King's birth. The federal and state holiday is Monday.

This is the first King state employees event since the General Assembly passed and McCrory signed into law an elections overhaul bill that in part requires photo identification to vote in person. Lawsuits allege the law harms the voting rights of minorities.
