ECU students take icy dip

GREENVILLE, N.C. -      EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY KICKED OFF THE SPRING SEMESTER WITH THE POLAR BEAR PLUNGE. THIS YEAR THE JUMPERS DOVE RIGHT INTO THE OUTDOOR POOL AT THE STUDENT RECREATION CENTER. THE FIRST POLAR PLUNGE BEGAN IN 1997 WITH 35 PARTICIPANTS. THAT NUMBER HAS SINCE BALLOONED TO MORE THAN A THOUSAND STUDENTS. 1,028 THIS YEAR TO BE EXACT. ECU STUDENTS BRAVED BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES ALL FOR THE THRILL OF THE JUMP AND A FREE T-SHIRT OF COURSE. IT'S THE 18TH TIME THE UNIVERSITY'S HELD THE EVENT. ECU WOMEN'S HEAD BASKETBALL COACH HEATHER MACY EVEN JOINED THE STUDENTS IN THE PLUNGE THIS YEAR.
