HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - Police say seatbelts would have made a difference in a Hawkins County crash that took the lives of two teens.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrol the driver was a 17-year-old boy from Surgoinsville. He was injured in the accident.

The passengers, Lacota Allison, 18, of Church Hill and William Nauert, 18, of Surgoinsville were killed.

THP officers said the car was traveling east bound on Kingsport Highway and hit a mailbox, then hit two culverts, went airborne, where it finally hit a utility pole.

Allison was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected from the car, while Nauert was trapped.

According to the report charges are pending and officers are talking with the local district attorney...

News Channel 11 did confirm that the teens went to Volunteer High School. The school released the following statement:

"The Volunteer community is heartbroken. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the students who passed away and our heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the recovery of the injured."

THP said another report will be released.
