Funeral arrangements announced for Wayne Co. sheriff

GOLDSBORO, N.C. -

The Wayne County Sheriff's announced funeral arrangements for Sheriff Carey A. Winders Saturday.

A service will be held on Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Kornegay Arena at the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive.

The burial will follow in the Wayne Memorial Park with Sheriff's Honors provided by the Wayne County Sheriff's Honor Guard, followed by Masonic Rites. Family members will greet friends on  Jan. 28, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church located at 1200 West Grantham Street, Goldsboro.

The sheriff's office said in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Union Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church at 1283 Union Grove Church Road, in Fremont or to the Wounded Warrior Projects located at 4200 Morganton Road, Suite 300, in Fayetteville.

Sheriff Winders body will lie in state at Shumate-Faulk on Jan. 27, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Winders died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home Friday morning. Wayne County EMS began treating Winders at his home before transporting him to Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said Maj. Fane Greeenfield will serve as sheriff until the County Commissioners appoint some to fulfill the rest of Winders term.
