HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - There are new reports of monkey sightings in the Tampa Bay area.

This time, it appears a rhesus macaque is taking up residence in Apollo Beach.

Residents of Mira Bay began seeing and sometimes hearing the monkey about two weeks ago.

Angie Griffin says she's heard the monkey, but hasn't seen it yet.

"Well you know, like the old Tarzan movies, you hear jungle sounds early morning,” said Griffin.

Several people saw the monkey and reported the sightings on Facebook, only to be laughed at by their friends.

Then one neighbor snapped a couple of cell phone pictures and the proof vindicated the first monkey spotters.

For nearly four years another rhesus macaque monkey was seen roaming the streets of Pinellas County.

He was even given his own Facebook page and called the "Mystery Monkey," perhaps in part because of his elusive behavior.

Eventually the "Mystery Monkey" became aggressive and jumped on a woman's back, scratching her in the process.

The mystery monkey was finally captured last October and now lives at Dade City's Wild Things Zoo.

Vernon Yates if the Director of Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation and captured the mystery monkey.

He's also been on the lookout for the new monkey in Apollo Beach.

"We first started getting reports on him he was up in the Dade City area, Zephyrhills, out by the fair grounds. We've been on several calls for him out by Apollo Beach,” said Yates.

The new monkey doesn't have a name, a Facebook page or even a twitter account.

Some people in the neighborhood where he's been spotted are even reluctant to talk about it.

One neighbor told a reporter she doesn't want to talk about it because she feels the monkey should be left alone in the natural habitat in the area.

Yates says if people see this monkey, they should stay away from it.

"The biggest thing I can tell anybody is, they should not try to feed him. They should not try to touch him or anything. Basically, they should call us or FWC and let us know when the site him,” said Yates.
