Fire breaks out at Manteo strip mall

Posted: Updated:
MANTEO, N.C. - Firefighters in Dare County and officers from the Manteo Police Department responded to an early morning fire at a store in the Chesley Mall Tuesday.

Manteo Police Chief, Vance Haskett, says they got the call around 5 a.m. at the mall just off Highway 64. When they arrived on the scene they found one of the stores in the strip mall fully engulfed.

It happened at the La Playa Bakery/Market.

Crews, including units from the Manns Harbor Fire Department and Nags Head Fire & Rescue, initially attacked the fire from the exterior of the building, knocking down the bulk of the fire. They extinguished it once inside.

While the fire was contained to La Playa, there was extensive smoke and water damage to two adjacent businesses. Others had some slight smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
