Fayetteville police warn of one-ring phone scam

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Fayetteville Police Department is warning residents of a single-ring phone scam that can cost more than $20 per minute.

Police say criminals are calling from a phone with an area code "473" and then hanging up. Sometimes the caller will let the phone ring until the victim answers, after which the caller, or robocaller system, indicates somehow that they are in distress and then hangs up.

Police say if either of these things happen, don't call the phone number back.

The area code "473" is not a domestic area code; it's actually the area code for Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Calls placed to "473" numbers are international calls and can be quite expensive. The rate can exceed $20 for the first minute.

Police are also asking people to beware of calls coming in from area codes "809", "284", "649" and "876", which like "473", are international and have been known to use in similar scams.
