Olympics: What to watch Saturday, Feb. 8

Posted: Updated:

The American team got off to a fast start Saturday in Sochi, the first day of full competition in the Winter Olympics.

Sage Kotsenburg tamed an incredibly difficult course in the men's snowboarding slopestyle event to grab a stunning gold in a major upset.

This is the first year slopestyle has been an Olympic event.

In women's hockey, Hilary Knight scored just 53 seconds into a match against Finland and the United States went on to win 3-1 in women's hockey. The U.S. is in the tough Group A, which also includes powerful Canada.

World champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White quick-stepped their way to victory in the team short dance, lifting the U.S. into the medals chase. Defending champs Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada were second and Russia's Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitiri Soloviev were third.

Sprint star Lauryn Williams was selected to push the U.S. bobsled driven by Elana Meyers. She has a chance at becoming only the second person to win gold at the Summer and Winter Games.

Bode Miller of the U.S. and Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway emerged as favorites on a treacherous downhill course in apline skiing. Miller and Svindal finished 1-2 in the final downhill training run. Asked of his objectives Saturday, Miller said: "Um, not kill myself was primary."

The medals began being handed out in earnest on Saturday.

The close-knit Norwegian team got a gold medal in the women's 15-kilometer skiathlon from Marit Bjoergen. The victory came a day after Norway suffered a loss when the brother of Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen died suddenly.

Medal competition Saturday also include:

  • Men's speedskating 5,000- meters
  • Men's biathlon 10 KM sprint
  • Women's freestyle skiing moguls.

American Hannah Kearney is the defending gold medalist in the women's freestyle skiing moguls and is competing in her third Olympics. The competition will be held at 1 p.m. Eastern time and highlights will air Saturday night as part of NBC's prime-time coverage.
