The Halifax County Sheriff's Office said a 21-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly sent pictures of his genitals to a 12-year-old girl.

Michael Eric Thomas, of Scotland Neck, was charged with one count disseminate obscenity to a minor under 13, authorities said.

The sheriff's office said Thomas sent the minor a picture message of his genitals after meeting her at church. The minor's mother frequently checked her cellphone when she found the image and alerted authorities.

Thomas was given a $5,000 bond with a first scheduled court date of March 12.
