BETHEL, N.C. -

UPDATE:

Bethel commissioner Gloristine Brown is now acting mayor of the town.

"It's been very tough, very unexpected," acting-Mayor Brown said. "The town will go on, and we will continue to do what's best for Bethel.

Also tonight, a better understanding as to why former Bethel mayor Mike Whitehurst stepped down from office.

The town Board of Commissioners provided 9 On Your Side with the former mayor's resignation letter.

In the letter, the mayor referred to himself and the board as "smug" and "ungrateful."

Those words are in reference to his disgust with the board questioning the performance of former town clerk Vicki Hall.

She, the mayor and deputy town clerk Sue Whitehurst, also the mayor's wife, resigned from their positions earlier this week.

Whitehurst is also very critical of town finance officer Andy Harris' performance.

The former mayor wouldn't talk on camera, but he did tell 9 On Your Side that he doesn't plan on pursuing elected office again.

He also says he will continue to be an active presence in the community.

------------

The mayor of Bethel and two other city personnel are resigning from their posts.

Mayor Mike Whitehurst tells 9 On Your Side's Brandon Goldner he's stepping down due to a "personnel decision."

The mayor wouldn't elaborate on that personnel decision. He did say the resignations of town clerk Vicki Hall and deputy town clerk Sue Whitehurst, who's also his wife, influenced his decision to leave office.

The city's holding a meeting right now to discuss the mayor's resignation and nominate a new mayor.

We'll have more on that meeting tonight at 9 On Your Side at 11.
