TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The name of the school is Armwood High. But many of the students that roam theses halls may not even realize that its namesake, Blanche Armwood, earned her teaching degree and started college at an age younger than they are right now.

Blanche Armwood's cousin Bernadette Washington is very proud of her family. She says Blanche Armwood was a remarkable woman.

"She finished from St. Pete Claver, and the age of 12, passed the teachers exam and since there was no black high school here in Tampa she was sent to Spelman," she said. "Blanche was a very unusual woman. A typical Armwood woman."

Blanche Armwood who was born in Tampa in 1890 was the youngest of five children. At 12 she went to Spelman in Atlanta and graduated 4 years later. She eventually ended up back in Tampa teaching domestic science.

"She was hired to teach those classes and she did such a good job with that," Washington said. "She developed several other schools in the nation, different places."

Armwood had a magnificent life that includes being the first Supervisor of Negro schools for Hillsborough County and a number of other prestigious positions. But she wasn't done there, her family said. She later on went to law school and got a law degree. She died a year after getting it. She never got a chance to use it.

Her family says, her legacy is an inspiration to all.

"The most important thing to me and to most of us in the family is there is nothing you cannot accomplish, if you're willing to work for it," Washington said. "She didn't believe she couldn't do anything. She set her mind to it and she put in the labor to get it done."
