Urban Ministries of Durham expecting increase in demand

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Urban Ministries of Durham is expecting to see an increase in people needing food next week.

Many parents in Durham lose out on pay because they have to stay at home with their children during snow days. Around 60 percent of Durham Public Schools students depend on free or reduced meals at school.

"We had a lady come in during the snow during the last week of January and she was crying," said Bryan Gilmer of the Urban Ministries of Durham. " She said, 'I had to feed my kids' She has four kids and she had to feed them lunch and breakfast for three days when she wasn't planning to need groceries for them and it ran her short of food."

The pantry serves 26 households per day but had to close because volunteers and clients were unable to travel due to the inclement weather.

Urban Ministries of Durham said donations are needed to meet the expect increase in demand.
