Flu claims 8 more lives in NC, total at 74

RALEIGH, N.C. -

State health officials say eight more people have died from the flu in North Carolina, bringing the total number of deaths for this season to 74.

The new deaths were reported in the week beginning Feb. 9 and ending Feb. 15. The State Department of Health and Human Services says adults ages 25 to 49 account for 30 of the deaths, followed by 24 deaths among people ages 50 to 64.

Fifteen people 65 or older have died of the flu. The flu also has killed 3 children under the age of four, including one infant, and two children between ages 5 and 17.

A year ago, 59 people died from flu-related symptoms during the six-month flu season that runs from early October to mid-May. Adults ages 65 or older accounted for 36 of the 59 deaths in 2012-13.
