RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Raleigh man charged with making threats against Mayor Nancy McFarlane asked his mother in a letter from jail to destroy his laptop.

Alec Dane Redner, 27, was arrested Jan. 15 on charges of threatening an executive, legal or court officer, and communicating threats.

Redner is accused of posting threats to the mayor's website on Jan. 13. The threats were made in the form of a comment, which said, "You make a joke about the U.S. Constitution but soon you will on the other end of barrel [expletive], watch out."

While in jail, police say Redner's incoming and outgoing mail was being monitored. And on Feb. 18, an investigator intercepted a letter from Redner to his mother in which he asked her to destroy is laptop, which he had hidden in her home's basement.

Investigators say they did not search the crawlspace during the initial search of Redner's home on Brass Kettle Road on Jan. 15.

"I need you to destroy that laptop," Redner wrote in the letter dated Feb. 14. "The laptop is located in the underground basement where I put lawn equipment/blower in."

Redner goes on to describe exactly where the laptop can be found, and then asks his mother to use "code" to indicate that she destroyed the computer.

"I will ask, 'Did dad get my letter?' And if you say, 'Yes,' then I will know you have destroyed it," he wrote. "In fact, send me a letter saying dad got my letter."

In addition to his previous charges, Redner is charged with one count of obstructing justice in connection with sending the letter. He is being held in the Wake County Jail.
