2 men charged in break-ins along American Tobacco Trail

DURHAM, N.C. -

Two men have been charged in connection with a string of car break-ins along the American Tobacco Trail in Cary and Durham.

Montaez Dupree Stanback, 24, and Antonio Rodney Hayes, 22, were arrested Feb. 14 and are charged in connection with multiple vehicle break-ins.

Stanback is charged with break or entering into a motor vehicle, felony conspiracy, and possession of stolen goods or property.

Hayes is charged with breaking or entering into a motor vehicle in Durham, misdemeanor larceny and injury to personal property.

Police say the men would bust out car windows and steal contents inside while people were on the American Tobacco Trail.

Durham County Sheriff's Office spokesman Paul Sherwin said the suspects were particularly bold because most car break-ins occur on unlocked cars.

"Whoever's doing it is actually breaking in to the vehicle," Sherwin said in December afer a car's window was smashed with a rock.

Sherwin called the crimes unusual because they happened in the daytime when people are around.
