BURGER BYTES: The Star-Spangled Preacher

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Francis Scott Key penned the song in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1812.

The tradition of Mishael Miller singing the national anthem at every Baltimore Ravens football game began during the franchise's inaugural game in 1996.

"As a result of them not wanting to listen to the 200 or so [audition] tapes they had, they rather have gone with the recommendation of my teacher [at Morgan State University] to sing at the very first home game only," Miller said.  "It last for 18 years."

For nearly 200 times, Miller's voice resonated to thousands of die hard Baltimore sports fans.

"You walk out there, and you see all these people who are looking at you, expecting you to cause them to experience a love for their country," Miller said.

Miller was born sing, but also to answer the calling of a higher power.

"A call that I knew would happen one day, but I didn't think it would be Birmingham," he said.

Singing gospel is his passion, but it's more than just music.  It's preaching that led him to the Magic City.

"I was definitely called to come to Birmingham to serve as pastor at Saint Luke AMC Zion Church," Miller added.

He was the minister of music and an assistant pastor at a church in Baltimore before making the move south.

He may have sung his last game with the Ravens, but he still finds time to sing in church.

"Prior to my sermons I sing a little bit," he said.  "I'm finding that it helps me, number one to connect with the people, connect with God and to center myself.

"Singing comes easy, that moment when I'm at the pulpit, its a moment to express to the people what I believe is what god is saying to them at the time."
