DURHAM, N.C. -

A Durham grandmother is dead and a 4-year-old remains hospitalized after being stabbed by a teenaged relative Tuesday morning.

Durham police were dispatched to a "cardiac arrest" call shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment in the 3400 block of Glasson Street.

Upon arrival, they found a woman stabbed to death. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police have identified the woman as Carolyn Hemingway, 62, of 3421 Glasson St.

Police say Hemingway's 4-year-old grandson was also injured in the incident and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials said Wednesday afternoon the 4-year-old was still hospitalized.

"I heard he was having a rough time, struggling, but hopefully he'll make it," said Gregory Jones, brother-in-law to Hemingway.

Police have charged Hemingway's older grandson, Treyvon Evans, 17, with murder and attempted murder.

"Investigators have conducted some interviews and from those interviews we were able to make an arrest," said Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez. "It was definitely not a random act of violence."

A caller to 911 described "a pool of blood" and said they didn't know what had happened because they were "just walking by."

The caller, asked about the boy, said, "He's not awake. He's not conscious."

Police said the stabbing occurred during an argument and another child was home at the time of the incident.

"Who would hurt a child? It would take a mean person to hurt a child," said Ellen Motley, a friend of the victim. "I'm mad as hell because she didn't deserve to die like that."

Evans was given no bond on the murder charge and a $500,000 bond on the assault with a deadly weapon charge.
